Robert "Rosey" Rosenthal

Robert "Rosey" Rosenthal is nationally known for his mythic-fantasy themed art and his unique panoramic landscape etchings. These mythic-fantasy etchings combine his love of history with his drawing skills and devotion to a complicated, physically demanding medium. A recognized innovator and teacher of this traditional graphic medium he has lectured regularly for the Cal Poly Art Department, local art organizations and garnered awards from the California Mid-State Fair, Santa Barbara Printmakers, Décor Magazine SLO Art Center and the California Renaissance Pleasure Faires.

In Granada, Spain, while Artist-in-Residence at the Fundación Rodriguez-Acosta he re-established their museum's etching workshop and collaborated with many of the best artists of Southern Spain. The years he and his family lived in Spain allowed him to visit many of the great art museums of Spain and Italy to learn from the talented artists of Europe.
Locally he is a past director of the San Luis Obispo Art Center, the premier art center/museum in the county. He is a co-founder and past president of the Central Coast Printmakers, which, for over 22 years has been the focal point for the graphic artists of this area.. For over 4 years he was the outspoken, guiding force of the large, diverse artists' cooperative, The San Luis Artists' Gallery.
His artistic skills were developed at Pratt Institute, a well known Art and Architecture University in Brooklyn, New York, and by 8 years as a Madison Avenue advertising art director, but it took the open, creative "follow your bliss" atmosphere of California to set him free to explore and nurture his own personal Mythic-Fantasy artistic visions.

Artist Statement

Alternating between painting and printmaking, I enjoy inventing new combinations. My media and approach vary according to the subject and effect I want to create. A small, precise mezzotint may be the chosen technique to honor a detail of nature, whereas I would choose a large painting to convey an expansive mood.

My artwork is based on both natural and social themes. Like many artist, I have been a nature lover since childhood. The pleasure I get from the natural world prompted my move to the Central Coast in 1981. I have taken advantage of my chosen location, using the State Parks and National Forests as parts of my studio, working directly in acrylic, oil and pastel, absorbing and learning from my surroundings. In that situation I am pleased with fairly natural color and perspective, using composition as the more expressive tool.

Studio painting and printmaking are quite different. Memory and interpretation alter what the eye has seen. Experiences and conclusions take form, and imagination is released. The canvas takes on its own life. Most of my work reflects a positive and often peaceful outlook, but I sometimes am compelled to address the conflicting and confusing parts of life. I see man as an integral part of the natural world (despite his tendency either to ignore it or try to conquer it) and include that theme in both paintings and prints.

Roads and paths find their way into many of my pictures. Maybe that is because I like to drive, to go, to see new places. Or they may be a metaphor for the journey we are all on. Learning, enjoying, sharing and practicing art is a great way to take that journey.
